Fata morgana is a phenomenon so rare that it is named after a mythological character, the fairy Morgana, the heroine of the legends about King Arthur. The first observations were recorded in the 17th century by a Sicilian priest.
Father Domenico Giardina managed to record the story of eyewitnesses who saw the city hanging in the air right above the Strait of Messina. People assured that they even considered the townspeople on its streets. The phenomenon continued for a long time. Then the air wave dispelled the amazing sight.
Optical illusion
The priest did not consider everything that happened as something incredible, trying to explain it with scientific reasons. Father Domenico called this phenomenon Fata Morgana, mentioning that it was caused by natural conditions. The reason was, according to the minister of the church, the refraction of light in water vapor.
Indeed, Fata Morgana is impossible without a certain combination of factors. Distortion of air occurs when light propagates. The curvature of the earth's surface is also important. Together, the aggregate gives rise to images of objects beyond the horizon. Fata Morgana also explains the widespread legend of the ghostly "Flying Dutchman".
The phenomenon has ceased to be a mystery in our days, but, as before, it fascinates everyone who sees. The most famous description is the 1891 entry. Above Lake Erie, an image of the city of Toronto, located several hundred kilometers away from the reservoir, suddenly appeared. The vision was so clear that the spiers of the temples and individual buildings were clearly visible.
