Vladimir Yumatov is a hereditary actor holding the title of Honored and People's Artist. To the surprise of his fans, he has neither an acting education, nor the slightest relation to the name of Georgy Yumatov.
Vladimir and Georgy Yumatov - what is the connection
When we hear the surname "Yumatov", the image of the famous actor Georgy Yumatov certainly appears in the imagination, especially since the surname is quite rare. Therefore, it is not surprising that Vladimir Yumatov repeatedly, giving interviews, has to debunk the myth of kinship with the star of the post-war cinema.
They never intersected on the set, since Vladimir came to the profession of an actor quite late. The only similarity is that both celebrities are native Muscovites. By age, Vladimir Sergeevich Yumatov (1951-19-05) is, of course, quite suitable for the sons of Georgy Alexandrovich (1926-11-03), but no more.
And who are the relatives
Vladimir Yumatov was born into a wonderful, creative family. Parents, Yumatov Sergey Trofimovich and Shravlina Tatyana Vladimirovna, were educated at the Opera and Drama Studio at the Moscow Bolshoi Theater. They knew firsthand what the school of K. S. Stanislavsky, as he ran the studio.
For the boy, the theatrical atmosphere at home was so natural, ordinary, that he did not feel the need to devote his whole life to this. However, noticing his son's musical abilities, his parents considered it right to send him to a military music school. There Vladimir, along with military bearing and discipline, received a good musical education.
The capital's military music school was a participant in all the parades on Red Square. Volodya studied there until the 8th grade and was part of the drummer company. But in addition to percussion instruments, here he mastered playing the piano and this skill has not lost over the years. Further, secondary education, Yumatov received in secondary school №820.
If often the parents-actors wish their children a different career, then in the Yumatov family, on the contrary, the mother and father predicted for their son an actor's career. The young man obeyed, but since his personal desire was not great, he was not at all upset because of his failure on round 3. A. Goncharov was gaining a course at that time. Not enrolling in GITIS, Vladimir readily responded to the call to the Army.
Contrary to the call of the ancestors
After demobilization, it was possible to try again at GITIS, but to everyone's surprise, Vladimir Yumatov passes exams at Moscow State University and soon becomes a student of the Faculty of Philosophy. And this is not just a youthful whim. He actually enjoyed studying at Moscow State University. Therefore, further followed by admission to graduate school, study at the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the CPSU.
Later, here Yumatov defended his dissertation on applied sociology. PhD thesis was devoted to the study of the influence of informal interpersonal communication on the further behavior of a person in society. Scientific work during this period was in the first place, and after graduation from the Academy, sociological work was continued, but only in the editorial office of the USSR State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company.
At that time, Vladimir Sergeevich held the position of deputy editor-in-chief of the department of letters and sociological research. However, when they tried to nominate him for the post of editor-in-chief, he immediately resigned. Yumatov explains this step by the mass of intrigues that reigned in the work collective and anonymous letters with which he did not want to deal.
But wherever he studied and whatever he did, Vladimir, nature generously endowed him with acting talent. This cannot be taken away. While still a student, he was responsible for the cultural work of his group, then, after the 5th year, he played in the student theater at Moscow State University, which was directed at that time by Roman Viktyuk.
And even after leaving the Academy of Social Sciences, he continued to participate in the productions of this theater. The alliance with the Moscow State University theater lasted a total of 7 years, until the expulsion of Viktyuk, according to Yumatov himself. I must say that the performances were a huge success, there were no empty seats in the hall. And for Vladimir it was the first stage experience.
Acting career: it's never too late
Despite its name - student, the theater at Moscow State University was run by professionals. At one time, performances were staged there by Yutkevich, Zakharov, Soloviev, Viktyuk. The theater studios "Leninskie Gory", "Our House", which were abolished by the decision of the Moscow City Committee of the CPSU, worked in the building of Moscow State University at different times.
The latter was directed by Mark Rozovsky, who in 1984 invited Yumatov to his studio theater "At Nikitskiye Vorota". Today it is the State Theater, where Vladimir serves to this day. True, for several years he combined his work in the theater with his previous work, but over time Rozovsky convinced him to make a choice in favor of the theater.
Even before the theater "At the Nikitsky Gate", Yumatov managed to play a small cameo role in the legendary film "The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed". He played the role of a guy who had a fight with his girlfriend on a bench. His last name was not indicated even in the credits, but the atmosphere of the set next to Vysotsky, Konkin, Yursky, Kuravlev did its job. After this work, Vladimir "fell ill" with cinema.
Until the 90s, Vladimir played only cameo roles in films, his main work was in the theater. But in 2002 he was lucky to get the main role in the serial film "Line of Defense". At that time, Yumatov was already 51 years old. Therefore, the viewer does not remember him on the screen when he was young. This was followed by work:

Over the past decade, Vladimir Yumatov has managed to make up for the missed opportunities of his youth, he has more than 100 films on his account. Almost every year 3-4 films are released with the participation of this actor, and there are still many plans ahead. At the beginning of 2019, "Reflection of the Rainbow", "Settlers", "Bailiffs", "Chernobyl" are already in production.
Personal life
As for family life, Vladimir Yumatov is married twice. Both spouses are not related to cinema. Both his first wife, Nadezhda, and the second, Irina, he met while working at the Academy of Social Sciences. The first marriage was short-lived. The breakup was facilitated by the passion for Irina, who was also married at that time.
Yumatov, leaving his first wife a common property, left both the family and the Academy. Irina Bulygina, in turn, also left the apartment to her husband. She is a psychologist by profession, much younger than Yumatov in age (a difference of 10 years). The marriage was legalized at the end of May 1989. Vladimir and Irina had two sons: Sergei and Alexei.
Irina is from a family of international journalists, so it is not surprising that her sons showed a craving for foreign languages. The eldest, Sergei, speaks two languages and is already working in the journalistic field, and the youngest is currently studying at the Institute of Foreign Languages. Yumatov does not hide the fact that he would like to see his offspring as actors. Surely, like his parents at one time, they dreamed of his acting career.
Who knows, maybe everything will come true. After all, he himself did not immediately decide on a profession. Vladimir Yumatov never received an appropriate education. The truth about this was remembered only in 2014, when the issue of the title of People's Artist was being decided. The actor himself is philosophical about the absence of "crusts".
