Of all the disasters that Russians are exposed to, floods are the most common. A catastrophe often takes on terrifying proportions, but it is quite simple to secure your own life: you need to prepare for the disaster strikes in advance.

Step 1

The only way to protect yourself from flooding is not to live in flooded areas. The Ministry of Emergency Situations, for example, reports that more than 60% of potentially dangerous areas are inhabited and built up with houses. Therefore, before starting construction or agreeing to purchase, be sure to make sure that the surrounding area does not fall into the risk zone. Given the nature of the disaster, there is no other way to be completely safe.

Step 2

If you do find yourself in a risk zone, the first thing you need to do is collect all important documents in a waterproof bag and put them in an easily accessible place. It makes sense in general to move everything valuable as much as possible from the floor. It is imperative to have at least a few prepared portions of dry rations and set aside money.

Step 3

Make sure that every member of your family knows how to turn off electricity (a wiring short-circuited in water is dangerous like nothing else) and gas; that everyone is aware of collection points for evacuation (contact local authorities for information).

Step 4

Equip easy roof access. An extension ladder is not the best choice as with a strong current, it can be thrown off. The safest way is to fix the steps directly on the walls of the house, or to think over a way out from the inside of the room.

Step 5

Purchase a swimming facility. But think about it: a fishing boat will take up a lot of space, but it will always be ready for use. In case of a flash flood, there will simply not be time to prepare an inflatable raft (especially since an electric pump may be needed).

Step 6

Explore the area. You should know all the heights and just tall objects (even a tree house can be a lifesaver). Clearly imagine the behavior of the river: why the flooding could have occurred, how long it would last, in which direction the current is going. The more you know, the more meaningful decisions you can make at a critical moment (for example, you don't have to believe rumors about the length of the flood).
