Libraries first appeared in the ancient East. The first library is recognized as a collection of clay tablets, whose appearance dates back to 2500 BC. The first tablets were found in the temple of the city of Nippur, located in the territory that previously belonged to Babylon. During excavations in one of the tombs of the Egyptian Thebes, they found a box with papyri, kept from the time of the 18th-17th centuries BC.

During the reign of Ramses II, it was possible to collect about 20,000 papyri. The most famous ancient oriental library is a collection of so-called cuneiform tablets from the palace of the Assyrian king of the 7th century BC. in Nineveh. Most of these plates included legal information. In ancient Greece, the first public library was founded in Hercules, its founder was the tyrant Clearchus (4th century BC).

The Library of Alexandria became one of the largest centers for the accumulation of books. Its foundation dates back to the third century BC, its creator was Ptolemy I. The Library of Alexandria was the center of education for the Hellenistic world. In addition, the library was part of a complex called a "museum". The complex also included living rooms, reading rooms and dining rooms, zoological and botanical gardens, and a library. Over time, astronomical and medical instruments, stuffed animals, busts, statues were also added to this complex, which were used in the learning process. The museum had a rich collection of approximately 900,000 papyri (200,000 were held in the Temple, and 700,000 in the School).
