Living in the modern world, we hear the word “identification” almost every day. We identify everything that surrounds us so often that we stop paying attention to this vital process.

What is identification
What is identification

We constantly identify people we know, objects, animals, information, images and memories, emotions. In fact, the list goes on for a very long time. So let's understand what this word really means. When we say that we identified someone or something, we mean that the object, be it a person, animal or object, was recognized by us. Have you ever wondered what that means? If not, then you will probably be interested to know the mechanism of this phenomenon. In order for the identification process to begin, the first necessary condition must be the perception of the recognizable object. It does not have to be a visual image, often the objects of identification are random smells, fragments of some sound series, physical sensations, and for supersensitive people it can even be the emotional background of a person nearby., begins its conscious or unconscious analysis and comparison with everything that relates to past experience. And when the analysis is completed, consciousness or subconsciousness will bring the object into one of the many categories into which the perceiving person divides the world. But let’s take an example of how this all happens: Imagine that it’s getting a little dark outside, and you’re waiting for your acquaintance. You peer at the silhouettes of people walking towards you, waiting for your significant other. And at this time, the recognition and entry of perceived objects into at least two categories is constantly taking place. The first is "This is he / she" and the second is "It is not he / she." But how does this all happen? Perceiving images in the distance, your mind constantly filters and correlates many factors, which include: height, build, gait, speed of movement, noticeable facial features, hairstyle, clothes, and so on. In this case, as soon as the object has been identified, according to a number of signs, it is entered into one of the categories. If this is not your acquaintance, then the person will be enrolled in the category “This is not he / she”, and the subconscious mind will give out a prepared pattern of behavior, for example, “do not make contact”. But as soon as you identify your acquaintance, the subconscious mind will immediately bring the observed object into the category "This is he / she" and will give out a completely different model of behavior. This is how it goes. And, regardless of whether we do it consciously or unconsciously, our whole life is a constant identification and division of the world into categories that we accepted during parenting, when communicating with other people, or created ourselves.
