Career

After his graduation in 1966, he took up a position as a junior clerk at Salomon Brothers, The Wall Street investment bank. Over the next several years, he worked hard and steadily moved up the career ladder.

He became CEO of Salomon Brothers in 1973. The bank was bought by Phibro Corporation in 1981, and Michael was fired from his job and received $ 10 million in severance pay.

Using money from his severance pay, in 1982 he began acquiring Merrill Lynch and Bank of America became his company's first client.

In the first five years, Michael's company established itself as highly successful and was renamed Bloomberg L. P. in 1987. Over the years, he and his staff have developed and presented several innovative products such as Bloomberg News, Bloomberg Message, and Bloomberg Tradebook. But in the late eighties, Blomberg unexpectedly left the position of CEO to pursue a political career.

In 2001, Michael Bloomberg decided to run for mayor of New York. He financed most of his mayoral campaign himself, spending millions of his personal fortune. He won the election and became the 108th mayor of New York on January 1, 2002.

In 2005, he ran for a second term and spent nearly $ 78 million on his campaign, surpassing the record of $ 74 million he spent in the previous election. He was re-elected mayor in November 2005 by a twenty percent margin.

He was re-elected for the third time in 2009.

In April 2006, Bloomberg, along with Thomas Menino, mayor of Boston, formed a coalition of mayors against arms trafficking. At the time of its creation, it included only 15 mayors, and by the end of 2014 their number had grown to 855.

He has always been a liberal and progressive. He supports abortion rights, same-sex marriage, and citizenship for illegal immigrants.

As mayor, he made a great contribution to the development of municipal health care and the growth of income for the citizens. He has prioritized HIV, diabetes and hypertension and has implemented a pilot program that allows girls over the age of fourteen to receive contraception without parental consent.

His third term as mayor of New York came to an end in 2013. In January 2014, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced that he had appointed Bloomberg as his special envoy. Michael became CEO of Bloomberg L. P. again at the end of 2014.

Politics

Before the 2016 presidential election, a team of analysts considered the possibility of nominating Bloomberg as the third independent candidate. However, in March, Michael officially refused to consider this issue.

On July 27, 2016, Bloomberg spoke at the Democratic National Conference in support of Hillary Clinton, to be honest, about how he came to support her, as well as his approach to politics.

“Whenever I come to the polling booth, I look at the candidate, not the party logo,” Bloomberg said in his primetime speech. “There are times when I disagree with Hillary Clinton. But let me tell you, whatever our differences are, I came here to say: we must put them aside for the good of our country. And we must rally around a candidate who can defeat a dangerous demagogue,”he said, referring to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

After Trump announced that he was withdrawing from the Paris Agreement in June 2017, the former mayor immediately gathered a coalition of influential politicians and announced that Bloomberg would provide charities with up to $ 15 million in funding to offset losses from the move.

In April 2018, Michael pledged $ 4.5 million to help meet US financial commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement for this year. Its founder will continue to provide funding, according to a statement released by Bloomberg Philanthropies. However, the businessman later said that he hoped that President Trump would change his mind on this issue next year.
