Yegor Letov is a famous Russian musician and poet, who was the permanent leader of the cult group Civil Defense. What is interesting about his biography and personal life?
Musician biography
Egor was born on September 10, 1964 in Omsk. His real name is Igor. Letov from childhood was fond of music, and also very much loved to draw and write poetry.
After graduating from high school, he entered to study at a construction school in the Moscow region, where he moved to live with his brother Sergei. He was also a famous musician and may have played a key role in the life of the future rocker. But his academic performance left much to be desired, and a year later the musician dropped out.
Letov returned to his native Omsk and founded the Posev group. In parallel with this, he worked at a factory, and also moonlighted as a janitor and watchman. Moreover, Yegor was listed as an artist and painted various communist posters.
In 1984, Letov created the legendary Civil Defense group. He records albums in an ordinary apartment on a tape recorder, so the sound of the songs turns out to be so deaf and indistinct. This becomes the main feature of the team. Even having received the opportunity to record in the studio, Yegor continues to bend his line and create songs in a makeshift way.
Letov always tried to go against the system. He did not consider himself a member of any musical movement, but simply enjoyed the music he was creating. Yegor did not play the guitar very skillfully, but, nevertheless, the number of the group's fans grew every day. This was largely due to the songs of the collective, which often included obscene words, as well as reasoning on the most painful topics of that difficult time.
This attracts the attention of the special services, and in 1994 Yegor was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for treatment. They pump him with strong psychotropic drugs and try to change his thinking. But Letov does not give in to such an influence, and after 4 months of imprisonment, his brother Sergei will save him. So the musician is released, and he returns to his work again.
After that, "Civil Defense" released several albums at once, including "Mousetrap", "Everything is going according to plan" and so on.
After recording two more albums, Letov creates another collective, with which he releases several compositions. Egor continues to work for two teams.
In the early 2000s, Letov became interested in politics and enrolled in the National Party of Russia. He is very close friends in the Limonovs. In 2004, the musician decides to quit politics and again pursues a career.
Letov has many new ideas for creativity, among which was the creation of a film. But they were not destined to come true. On February 19, 2008, Yegor died under rather strange circumstances. In the conclusion, it was said that the musician had poisoned himself with ethanol. This is how the earthly journey of a cult musician for young people of the 90s of the 20th century ended.
Personal life of a musician
There were only two main women in his life. At the beginning of his career, he met rocker Yanka Diaghileva, with whom he lived and performed at concerts. After the death of the girl, Letov first lived in a civil marriage with her friend, and then married the future guitarist of the "Civil Defense" group Natalya Chumakova. She was with the musician until his very last days. None of his wives were able to give birth to a child to Yegor.
