Recently, the Russian language has been flooded with various words borrowed from other languages. One of them is the word "sequel", which is especially often used in the field of cinema.
The meaning of the word "sequel"
The word "sequel" can be translated as "continuation". Recently, it has become actively used to designate various works of art, in particular, those that are a direct continuation of the original source. For example, it is customary to designate a sequel in cinematography with the number “2” or use an additional name: “Spider-Man 2” or “The Amazing Spider-Man: High Voltage”. The same rule is used for naming computer games. As for literary works, usually the continuation of the original source no longer carries the number 2 in the title, but has a subtitle: “Twilight. Saga. Eclipse ", etc.
The main feature of any sequel is that it directly continues the plot of the original work, or it uses the names of already known characters from the first part, the same idea develops, etc. At the same time, there are other designations for new works from the same series, for example, "triquel" (continuation of the sequel), "prequel" (prehistory of the first part of the work) and others.
Are sequels getting popular?
It is convenient to call the upcoming sequel of this or that work a sequel due to the fact that its official name often remains unknown until the very release. Nevertheless, it becomes known that a sequel will be released after the release of the original source. For example, the filmmakers declare that they are satisfied with the amount of box office fees and intend to release the second part or even several sequels at once. From that moment on, the word "sequel" began to be used on the Internet and in the press to refer to a new film or other work in the series.
When creating a sequel, most authors, directors and other media persons strive to surpass the original and make the new work brighter, more interesting, full of new events and characters. However, this scheme does not always work, and often critics meet the new continuation of the series rather coldly. But at the same time, if the original story really succeeded and the public liked it, the release of its sequels, triquels or prequels is expected as a truly bright event, and the authors make every effort not to fall on their face in the mud. In this case, the published works really become popular and beloved in wide circles.
