Ted Chan is well known to fans of science fiction. An American writer with Chinese roots suddenly burst into world literature and was able to immediately gain a foothold in it. His creations are characterized by a peculiar style, similar to a technical assignment. It was with this that Chan captivated the fantastophiles.
Biography: early years
Ted Chan was born on October 20, 1967 in Port Jefferson, 99 km from New York. Little is known about his childhood. After school, he became a student at the prestigious Brown University, where he mastered computer science. After graduation, Chan took notes for a computer magazine in Seattle. This subsequently left an imprint on his writing career.
Before joining literature, Ted managed to work in his specialty. So, he was a programmer in a number of computer companies, as well as in government agencies.
Creation
The Tower of Babel is Chan's debut creation. He presented this laconic story to the readers of the Omni edition in 1990. In it, Ted radically rethought the biblical scripture. In his book, people build a tower because of the love of God, not because of a quarrel. They just wanted to be closer to the Creator. Having completed the tower to the sky, people saw that the world resembles a cliché cylinder for copying cuneiform.
Fans of science fiction and critics took this story with a bang. In Russia, it was first published in the "If" edition.
Chan's first work won the Nebula Prize. Also, the story was nominated for "Hugo" and "Locus". After this success, Ted went to the legendary Clarion Seminar, which is attended by young writers.
In 1991, Chan published two science fiction stories, Division by Zero and Understand. The first piece was nominated for Nebula, and the second for Hugo. At the same time, both stories became nominees for "Locus".
In 1992, for the story "Understand", Chan became the best author according to the results of a poll among readers of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine.
This was followed by a lull. Chan did not publish new works for a long time. He returned to readers in 1998, presenting the story "The Story of Your Life." She has also received numerous awards.
A year later, Chan presented a new work - the story "72 Letters". This book has received the World Fantasy Award and the Sidewise Award. In it, the writer reflects on the birth and reproduction of people as a constant finite value.
