The Bible is a collection of texts that are considered sacred in Christianity and Judaism. There are canonical and non-canonical texts. All churches recognize different sets of texts in the Bible as sacred. Usually the Bible is divided into Old and New Testaments.
Instructions
Step 1
For the first time the word "Bible" was used by John Chrysostom and Epiphanius of Cyprus in the 4th century, in the texts of the holy book this word can not be found. Jews call these books "Scriptures", early Christians said "Gospel" or "Apostle". The word "bible" means "book" and is of Greek origin.
Step 2
The Old Testament is the first part of the Bible. It is divided into 39 books, for the most part, this is the same as the Hebrew Bible, but in Christianity the parts are somewhat rearranged. Additionally, the Old Testament may include Deuterocanonical books. The Old Testament is written in Hebrew, some parts in Aramaic. There are 22 books in the Hebrew Old Testament, the same number as in the Hebrew alphabet. In the Western tradition, there are 39 books in it.
Step 3
The New Testament is made up of 27 books, of which the first four are the canonical Gospels, one book of the Acts of the Apostles, also this is the 21 Epistle of the Apostles and the Revelation of John the Theologian. Additionally, some churches recognize other texts as sacred, but the list varies. The New Testament is written in ancient Greek. Judaism does not recognize this book, and for world Christianity it is the most important source. If the New Testament in some way contradicts the Old Testament, then Christians recognize the New Testament. The New Testament has 8 authors: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, James, Paul, Peter and Jude. Most of the sacred texts in the Bible are recognized by the Ethiopian Catholic Church, out of 81 there.
Step 4
In the Russian Orthodox tradition, the books of the New Testament are ordered as follows. Law-positive books come first. Then the Gospels follow in this order: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. After them comes the historical book of the Acts of the Holy Apostles. Followed by instructive books: Epistle of James, Epistle of Peter, Epistle of John, Epistle of Jude, Epistle of Paul. Next is the Revelation of John the Theologian.
