The future world champion was born on May 23, 1951 in an ordinary Soviet family. At that time, the parents lived in the famous city of Zlatoust in the Urals. My father worked at one of the defense plants, first in a working position, and then as an engineer. With his participation, new, modern weapons systems were created. The head of the family paid great attention to the development of his children, the eldest daughter and the youngest son. At the age of four, Tolik already knew how to play chess. Like all the children of that time, Karpov went to school when he was seven years old. And soon he began to attend a chess club. In the third grade, Anatoly fulfilled the first-grade norm, and at the age of 15 he became a master of sports in chess. From that moment on, he began to think about a sports career. In 1966, Karpov first went to an international tournament held in Czechoslovakia and came out the winner. For his success, he received a commemorative medal and a cash prize of 200 rubles. At that time, the amount was substantial.

Further developments showed that Anatoly Karpov has a strong character and psychological stability. Even in the most difficult situations on the board, he did not lose his composure and found the right solution. In 1968, at the World Youth Championship, which was held in Stockholm, Karpov took first place. Soviet chess players have not achieved such success since 1955. In the early 70s, Anatoly began preparations for the match for the world title. However, in the spring of 1975, the reigning champion, American Bobby Fischer, refused to play. Then Karpov was simply awarded the title of the 12th world champion.

Recognition and privacy

For ten years, Anatoly Karpov held the title of champion in his hands. And it was not so easy to do it. And only in 1985 he ceded this title to Garry Kasparov. The chess and social life of Anatoly Evgenievich did not end there. He continued to actively play chess and engage in politics.

The personal life of the famous chess player took shape from the second time. The first marriage lasted three years. The wife was not ready for her husband's long absences. For the second time, Anatoly Karpov married Natalya Bulanova, who did her best to create comfortable conditions for him to work and rest. The husband and wife raised their daughter Sophia.
