In 1966, Karpov first went to an international tournament held in Czechoslovakia and came out the winner. For his success, he received a commemorative medal and a cash prize of 200 rubles. At that time, the amount was substantial.
Further developments showed that Anatoly Karpov has a strong character and psychological stability. In 1968, at the World Youth Championship, which was held in Stockholm, Karpov took first place. Soviet chess players have not achieved such success since 1955. In the early 70s, Anatoly began preparations for the match for the world title. However, in the spring of 1975, the reigning champion, American Bobby Fischer, refused to play. Then Karpov was simply awarded the title of the 12th world champion.

For ten years, Anatoly Karpov held the title of champion in his hands. And it was not so easy to do it. And only in 1985 he ceded this title to Garry Kasparov. The chess and social life of Anatoly Evgenievich did not end there. He continued to actively play chess and engage in politics.
