The future striker was born on November 20, 1979 in the city of Moscow. Dmitry is a hereditary athlete. As a child, Dmitry was involved in many sports, but settled on football. At the age of 7 he entered the football school of the Moscow Lokomotiv. After 4 seasons, he joined the Trudovye Rezervy children's team. The last youth team for the forward was the CSKA team.

From 16 to 18 years old Dmitry played in the double of Moscow Lokomotiv. For the main team of Lokomotiv, the forward made his debut in 1997, in the Russian Cup match. In total, Bulykin played 7 seasons for the Moscow railroad workers. As part of Lokomotiv, he won the Russian Cup twice.

In 2001, Dmitry moved to Dynamo Moscow, where he spent 6 seasons and was called up to the Russian national team. Then Dmitry spent the season in Belgium, but due to the scandal with the head coach he was loaned to Fortuna from Dusseldorf. In Germany, he was seriously injured, could not show himself in full force and returned to Anderlecht again. In August 2010, he was again loaned, but now for the Dutch championship, to the ADO Den Haag team.

In Holland, the striker played 30 games and scored 21 goals. There, Dmitry was noticed by the scouts of the Ajax Amsterdam. Bulykin signed a contract for one season with the Amsterdam team. As part of Ajax, he became the champion of Holland. At the end of the season, Ajax did not want to renew the contract with the forward.

In the summer of 2012, Bulykin signed a two-year contract with another Dutch club, Twente, in which the striker spent 2 seasons and returned to the Russian championship to end his rich career. Dmitry Bulykin played his last match at the professional level on March 10, 2014.

In the national team, Dmitry played 15 games and scored seven goals. In the camp of the national team, he took part in the European Football Championship in 2004.
