But the heroes of the film honor ancient traditions and want to carry out the funeral ceremony as it was customary from time immemorial among their ancestors.
Setting off to cremate a woman's body without hindrance, they take with them birds from the order of passerines - buntings. Small birds symbolize the souls of the heroes, it is no coincidence that the picture was shown in the world box office under the title "Silent Souls".
On the way, Tanyusha's husband, Miron, tells Stork the details of their family life, including their intimate life - “fumes” - this is also part of the ritual of farewell to the deceased. During the journey, the heroes perform other rituals in memory of the deceased.
The film is sad, sad. And this is not only the story of the hero's farewell to his love. This is a lament for Russia, its ancient culture that is receding into the past, dying villages and cities, departing ethnic groups. The simple landscapes of the Russian hinterland look in the film not gloomily, but solemnly and sadly, like funerary decorations in a grandiose performance of farewell.
A special atmosphere is created by music of a clearly ethnic direction, reminiscent of ancient shamanic rituals.
