Step 1
Choose a method of obtaining citizenship. Swiss law provides two options: general and simplified. The latter is provided for the acquisition of citizenship by spouses of Swiss citizens. Citizenship in the usual manner is eligible for persons who have lived in the country for at least 12 years, as well as children of foreign citizens aged 10 to 20 years, whose period of stay in Switzerland was at least 6 years.
Step 2
Spouses of Swiss citizens are entitled to a simplified procedure for obtaining citizenship. To apply, they must have lived in the country for 5 years, while being married to a Swiss citizen for three years. If a foreigner has naturalized according to the general procedure, his or her spouse is also entitled to a preferential registration - five years instead of 12.
Step 3
Children who have at least one parent - a Swiss citizen, acquire citizenship by birth. If both parents are foreigners, the child is naturalized on a common basis.
Step 4
Apply for citizenship to the Federal Migration Service. A review will be scheduled for your case. The authorities will find out if you have problems with the law and if you pose a danger to the country. The financial viability of the candidate, the degree of his integration, knowledge of the language, and compliance with the rules of tax legislation must be checked.
Step 5
After submitting your application, you will receive government approval for citizenship. However, the bureaucratic procedures do not end there. Separate consent from local governments is required. Sometimes they put forward their own conditions - for example, some cantons may require knowledge of two or even three languages - German, French and Italian. If the territorial authorities give the go-ahead, the applicant receives permission to obtain citizenship from the canton in which he lives, and later from the entire local community.
