Starting conditions

Today, no one is surprised by the fact of a heart or other organ transplant from one person to another. People with an organ donor are able to lead a fulfilling lifestyle. But a brain transplant is not yet available to specialists. Alexander Alexandrovich Potapov is a famous Russian neurosurgeon. He is the head of the National Medical Center for Neurosurgery. In this center, very complex operations are performed, including on the human brain. A few years ago, such procedures seemed fantastic.

The future neurosurgeon scientist was born on July 5, 1948 in a family of builders. Parents at that time lived in the village of Altyaryk, which is located in the Fergana region of Uzbekistan. My father worked on the laying of irrigation canals. Mother, a doctor by profession, received patients in the village polyclinic. The child grew up, not standing out in any way among his peers. Alexander studied well at school. In high school, when it was time to choose a profession, he firmly decided that he would become a surgeon. After the tenth grade, Potapov went to Moscow to get a specialized education at a medical institute.

Professional activity

Alexander studied at the famous Pirogov Second Medical Institute. As a student, he moonlighted as an ambulance orderly. Often the brigade had to go to the places of traffic accidents. The future surgeon observed and helped people who received head injuries of varying severity. He tried to understand what happens to the brain during a catastrophe and how it can be saved and reanimated. In 1973, after graduating from the Potapov Institute, he was assigned to the Burdenko Institute of Neurosurgery.

Potapov's professional career developed along an ascending trajectory. But he "ascended" not on the administrative ladder, but on the qualification ladder. After a short period of time, he already performed operations on his own. Every month and year, Alexander Alexandrovich undertook more and more complex procedures. Purposefulness and creativity helped him create a number of techniques that made it possible to increase the effectiveness of surgical intervention in the cranium.
