What to call a resident of Voronezh - a Voronezh or a Voronezhan? And with the inhabitants of this city it is even more difficult. Voronezhka, Voronezhanka or Voronezhenka - which name will be correct?
Instructions
Step 1
In most cases, residents of the city of Voronezh are called Voronezh residents. The representative of the stronger sex in this case is a Voronezh, but this form does not have a feminine gender. Therefore, to designate beautiful ladies in such cases, the construction "resident of Voronezh" is used.
Step 2
Back in the 19th century, the inhabitants of Voronezh were called "Voronezhan" (in the masculine and feminine gender - "Voronezhanin" and "Voronezhanka", respectively). But in the last, twentieth century, residents of the city considered that these difficult-to-pronounce names, firstly, were already outdated, and secondly, they did not sound very good. And they decided to call themselves Voronezh, even if they lost their feminine form.
Step 3
Now the word "Voronezh" still appears in dictionaries - sometimes marked "obsolete", sometimes as a full-fledged synonym for "Voronezh". Nevertheless, residents of the city generally prefer to be called "in a new way" and sometimes react very sharply to attempts to call them "Voronezhan". Therefore, despite the fact that from the point of view of the Russian language, both options are acceptable, it is still better to use the more widespread and more modern form, calling the inhabitants of Voronezh Voronezh. At least no one will be offended.
