Small talk is a small conversation that occurs, as a rule, between two strangers. This exchange of remarks allows you to "probe" the interlocutor, understand his mood, discuss the weather, taste preferences or world news. You can learn to conduct small talk by following a few rules.

Rule one: a confident start

Small talk and shyness are incompatible things. From the very beginning, you must present yourself as a confident person in front of the interlocutor (s). Therefore, you should not smile shyly, smooth a skirt-dress or take out your phone.

In any situation, no matter what social status the person standing in front of you belongs to, a sweet smile and a competent presentation of yourself will help you. It is advisable not to modestly pronounce the name and surname, but to provide more complete information: name, surname, who you are by profession. This is especially appropriate if small talk needs to be maintained with business partners. Please note: it is not necessary to stretch your hand to shake (and if the interlocutor is older than you or higher in rank, he should make the decision about the appropriateness of the handshake).

Try to remember the data of the interlocutor. This will allow you to refer to him later by name (which will demonstrate your listening skills) or, if there is a hitch, ask something about his work. Another way to continue small talk is to make a compliment. Only in this case it is necessary to notice something appropriate to the situation.

Rule two: active listening

Good small talk won't work if you don't know how to listen. This is necessary in order to endear a person to himself. Nod, look at your interlocutor in a friendly manner, periodically repeat the last words he said.

This technique is called active listening. It should be carried out unobtrusively so that it does not seem as if you are imitating. If you want to leave a pleasant impression about yourself, it is also recommended to follow the person's posture ("mirroring") and do not forget to praise his interests, successes, opinions.

Rule three: draw yourself

Small talk, however, is not only about assenting and listening, but also allowing you to sketch yourself out. This moment must be carefully considered in order to understand how much and to whom you can entrust information. Remember: small talk can develop into a closer acquaintance, or it can be forgotten immediately after parting. The development option largely depends on the trusted information and on their presentation.

The latter largely depends on the image in which you arrive. This feature is very typical for small talk at receptions, parties, presentations and other events. You need to become a kind of "heroine" with the help of which you appear in the right light. This method of self-promotion is very effective and allows you to make useful contacts in a few minutes.
