The future actor and director was born in Tver on November 18 (according to the new style - December 1), 1903. Mikhail's father was a railway paramedic. The boy remembered for the rest of his life the beeps, the noisy noise of the trains, the bright sheaves of sparks flying out of the pipes of steam locomotives.

In 1917, when German troops approached Revel, the family was evacuated to Tsarskoe Selo. That autumn, Mikhail went to the seventh grade of the Tsarskoye Selo gymnasium. Every day he passed by places that were associated with Pushkin. This period in the life of the future actor was very short. However, it was in the gymnasium, during school performances, that Tsarev received his first directing and acting skills.

During the Civil War, Mikhail studied at the Petrograd School of Russian Drama under the teacher Yu. M. Yuriev. At the entrance exam to school, Mikhail decided to read the Gorodnichy's monologue from Griboyedov's immortal play "The Inspector General". And I got to the point - the examiners liked his interpretation.

Tsarev entered the troupe of the Bolshoi Theater in 1920 - while still a student. For several years he worked at the Vasileostrovsky theater.

From 1924 to 1926, Mikhail Ivanovich played in the former Korsh Theater (Moscow). Then he took part in productions given by the theaters of Simferopol, Makhachkala, Kazan.

From 1931 to 1933 Tsarev was an actor at the Pushkin Academic Drama Theater in Leningrad. Subsequently, he worked at the Meyerhold Theater, and after its closure in 1937, he moved with a group of key actors to the Maly Theater. It was with the Maly Theater that the subsequent fate of Tsarev was connected: for many years Mikhail Ivanovich was its director, and since 1985 - the artistic director. The actor and director is considered one of the most outstanding masters of the Maly Theater school. The main emphasis of Tsarev, the director, was on a careful attitude to speech and detailed working out of the plastics of movements.

The career of Mikhail Tsarev was also successful in the cinema. Since 1932, Mikhail Ivanovich began acting in films. His first successful work was the film "Winners of the Night". In the future, Tsarev took part in film adaptations of performances more than once.

Since the beginning of the 40s, Tsarev tried his hand at teaching: he worked with students of the Shchepkin Theater School. Since 1962 Mikhail Ivanovich has been a professor.

The famous actor and filmmaker was a member of the Communist Party. He received his party ticket in 1949.

The actor passed away on November 10, 1987.
