Step 1
Find out what type of visa you will need to obtain. There are 2 types of student visas - F and M. The first is issued to high school students and university students, and the second is intended for those who plan vocational training after receiving higher education, for example, want to enroll in an MBA program. In some cases, students are better off applying for other visas. For example, if you study less than 18 hours a week, you can do so on a tourist visa, and graduate students who enroll in American universities must apply for a work visa if they plan to receive a salary for their research.
Step 2
Collect the package of documents for obtaining the visa you need. The list of papers is regularly updated on the website of the American Embassy in Russia. However, in general, the requirements remain unchanged - you must provide a document from the host educational institution, which will indicate the training program. You also need to prove that you have enough money to pay for your studies and living expenses. You can present a letter of guarantee from the person who will support you, a bank account, a certificate of receipt of a scholarship. If a minor child is traveling to study, you will need permission from both parents to leave the country, certified by a notary.
Step 3
Schedule your visa interview. After that, you will be able to pay the consular fee. In 2013, it was $ 160 for all types of student visas. If you have a child or a spouse, you can apply for a visa for him too, but you will have to prove that you have sufficient income for the whole family, since the accompanying person does not always get the right to work. Please note that parents or siblings will not be able to obtain an accompanying visa.
