Jack Lemmon is a popular American film actor, remembered by Russian audiences for his role as Daphne in the film "There are only girls in jazz." However, Lemmon's track record is much wider, and many of his works have been awarded the most prestigious film awards, including two Oscars.
Childhood and youth
Jack Lemmon was born into a very wealthy family and was an only child. His father was the president of a large donut company, a career he was planning for his son. However, Jack had his own plans for the future - from an early age he dreamed of an acting career.
Jack's biography differs from his colleagues in the shop: he did not have to struggle for a long time, earn extra money, leave home. Young Lemmon received an excellent education, he graduated from the prestigious Massachusetts private school, and then went to Harvard. After university, the young man went to serve in the navy for a whole year.
Carier start
The first acting experiments began at the university. Jack participated in student amateur performances, received an invitation to cameo roles in a local theater. Later he got on radio and television. Lemmon has always loved experimentation, and he still had to find his role.
The actor was noticed after starring in the film "This Has Got to Happen to You." A year later, he received another interesting offer in the tragicomedy "Mr. Robins". The success was overwhelming, the young actor received his first Oscar for his supporting role. True, the role became fatal for Lemmon - from now on, the directors firmly established him in the role of a comedian.
The situation was corrected by an invitation to the role of Jerry-Daphne in the film "Some like it hot" (in the Russian box office "There are only girls in jazz"). The result was phenomenal popularity and a fruitful alliance with the director of the tape, who involved Jack in several subsequent projects.
In 1964, Lemmon met the actor Walter Mattau. He became Lemmon's best friend and partner, with whom they formed an excellent acting duo. Friends starred together for over 30 years, among the most interesting works "Old Grumblers" and "Strange Couple".
Having achieved unprecedented success in the comedy genre, Lemmon decided to try himself in serious drama. Success continued to accompany the actor: for the main role in the film "Save the Tiger" Jack received a second Oscar. After 1970, the actor was filmed less often, but his piggy bank was replenished with honorary prizes of the Cannes and Venetian festivals, as well as the Golden Globe.
Personal life
The first wife of Lemmon was the actress Cynthia Stone, the son of Chris was born in the marriage. The couple broke up by mutual agreement, but maintained a good relationship. The second time Jack married actress Felicia Far, a few years after the wedding, his daughter Courtney was born.
The actor's family life was overshadowed by health problems. He suffered from cancer, the disease proceeded slowly but painfully. After a long struggle, the body could not stand it. The actor passed away in 2001 and was buried next to his friend and longtime creative partner Walter Mattau.
