Step 1

Step 2
If you decide to tackle the issue of acquiring citizenship on your own, then first familiarize yourself with the legislation of the Russian Federation. The employees of the passport and visa service at your place of residence can also help you with this. You can ask them for help in person or by phone.
Step 3
There are two procedures for acquiring citizenship: a simplified procedure and a general one. With the introduction of new rules into the legislation, the procedure for adopting Russian citizenship for some categories of citizens has been significantly simplified. Now it is no longer necessary to continuously reside in Russia for five years and have a residence permit for such categories of citizens: • persons born on the territory of the RSFSR and who had USSR citizenship; • veterans of the Great Patriotic War; • foreigners who have been legally married to a citizen of the Russian Federation for at least three years • disabled persons with children who are citizens of Russia.
Step 4
If you do not fit into these categories, then you will have to acquire Russian citizenship on general terms. To do this, you must: • have lived at least five years from the moment you received a residence permit in Russia until the day you applied for the acquisition of Russian citizenship; • comply with the laws and the Constitution of Russia, must have no criminal record; • have legal earnings • speak Russian • renounce your other citizenship.
Step 5
Now you should collect all the necessary documents. Prepare originals and copies of the following documents: • application for citizenship; • residence permit; • document confirming your legal income; • document of completed education; • confirmed renunciation of another citizenship you have; • birth certificate; • Marriage certificate.
Step 6
With all the collected documents, go to the passport and visa department at your place of residence and submit them for consideration. The terms for consideration of the application are different. For the simplified procedure, the review period is six months, and for the general procedure - a year.
Step 7
After you have been confirmed the right to obtain citizenship, you will be able to obtain a Russian national passport in the prescribed manner. If you are denied citizenship for various reasons, you can go to court.
