After a while, the parents together with the child moved to the city of Molotov, now known as Perm. The head of the family was appointed to a responsible position at the local aviation school of pilots.
The boy's biography was developing quite well. As a teenager, he was enthusiastically engaged in the flying club. He dreamed of following in his father's footsteps and becoming a pilot. However, the measured course of life was interrupted by the war. Vladimir, due to his youth, was not taken to the front. In order not to remain an idle contemplator of events, the young man went to work as a mechanic at an aircraft repair enterprise. A year later he was admitted to the pilot school. In the fall of 1943, junior lieutenant Gulyaev is sent to the active army.
It so happened that he got to fight on the legendary attack aircraft IL-2. Staff clerks kept a record of combat missions, and the pilot Gulyaev performed the tasks assigned by the command. The military merits of Vladimir Leonidovich were marked with two Orders of the Battle Red Banner and two Orders of the Patriotic War. At the Victory Parade, he walked in a solemn formation along Red Square. It was not possible to continue his career as a pilot. Doctors categorically insisted on dismissal from the army for health reasons. The heavy wounds received at the front made themselves known.
The decision to become an actor has ripened for a long time. Having changed his uniform jacket for a civilian jacket, Vladimir Gulyaev decided to get an appropriate education and entered the VGIK. In 1951 he completed his studies and went to work at the Theater-Studio of the film actor. By this time, he knew well how Soviet citizens live, their aspirations and concerns. Famous and novice directors began to invite him to their films. The artist played his first memorable role in the film "Spring on Zarechnaya Street".
