Vera Valentinovna was born in Kotlas, Arkhangelsk region on February 21, 1942. Her grandmother and mother were actresses and worked in the theater. Father was also an actor, he died when Vera was 4 years old. Then the family moved frequently. They lived in Ukraine, Altai, Uzbekistan.
The girl dreamed of becoming an actress, but her mother categorically objected. She wanted Vera to be a doctor. However, the girl failed her exams at the medical school. She worked in production for a year.
In 1961, Alentova still went to enter the theater school. She was admitted to the Moscow Art Theater, where she met Vladimir Menshov. Both were considered unpromising.

In 1969, a daughter, Julia, appeared, but the couple still thought about divorce. But it did not take place, Menshov came to his wife and daughter every weekend. The couple began to live together again when Julia became a first grader.
