Brazilian musician Max Cavalere is already well over fifty. During his very long career, he managed to organize several rock bands. But he is best known, perhaps, as the founder and frontman of the thrash metal band Sepultura.
Family and early years
Max Cavalera was born in 1963 in the large Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte. His father, Graziano Cavalera, was an Italian diplomat, and his mother (her name is Vania) was a model for some time. It must also be said that Max was not the only son of Vania and Graziano, in 1970 another boy was born in the family - Igor.
Since childhood, Max was fond of music. Initially, he listened to such "classic" metal bands as Iron Maiden, AC / DC and Motorhead. However, then he became interested in the creativity of bands that make noticeably harder music - Venom, Slayer, Possessed, etc.
Max Cavalera and Sepultura
In 1984, Max, together with his younger brother Igor and two other young musicians, created the Sepultura group (by the way, the word “Sepultura” is translated from Portuguese as “grave”). In the newly formed group, Max acted as a vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and also a lyricist. In the eighties, Sepultura released three audio albums - Morbid Visions, Schizophrenia and Beneath the Remains. And I must admit that the group's musical work quickly gained popularity in South America. Many listeners liked the heavy, dense riffs and dark lyrics on religious and political themes.
In 1991, Max moved from Brazil to the United States (more specifically, to the city of Phoenix, Arizona). And in the same 1991, Sepultura's fourth album, "Arise", was released. This album was very successful commercially and even went platinum at some point.
After that, two more excellent records of the Sepultura group were recorded with Max Cavalera in the composition - "Chaos A. D." and "Roots". The last album turned out to be especially bright. When recording it, the group went on an experiment, trying to combine their own heavy sound with the musical traditions of South American tribes. For this, the members of the group visited the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, where they talked with the local Chavante tribe. Moreover, people from this tribe even took part in the recording. Ultimately, it turned out to be a very distinctive disc, many of the songs of which are dedicated to Brazilian culture.
Some time after the release of the album "Roots" something happened that no one expected - Max left the group. In 1996, a statement was posted on the rock band's internet portal that he was no longer a member of Sepultura. And fans are still wondering why exactly this happened. At the same time, Igor Kavalera remained in the group, and in general, after that, relations between the brothers remained tense for a long time.
Further creativity
In 1997 Max Cavalera organized a new project - Soulfly. And it has also gained significant popularity in many countries around the world. At the moment, this group has already recorded eleven studio records. The last one is called "Ritual". It was released on October 19, 2018 by Nuclear Blast Recording Studios. In the USA, 3600 copies of this disc were sold in the first week, which is a very decent result in our times.
It is also worth noting that in 2008, Max still made up with his brother Igor. This year, for the first time in more than ten years, they teamed up under the side project Cavalera Conspiracy and recorded an album called "Inflikted". This disc has received high marks from many music critics. It included 11 main tracks as well as 2 bonus tracks (one of them is a cover of the Possessed song "The Exorcist").
The next album Cavalera Conspiracy was released in March 2011 and was called "Blunt Force Trauma" (this phrase can be translated into Russian as "Injury from a blow with a blunt object").
Two years later, in 2013, another important event took place in the life of Max Cavalera - he published, in collaboration with the British writer Joel McIver, his book of memoirs “My Bloody Roots”.
In 2014, Cavalera Conspiracy's third album, Pandemonium, was released, and in 2017, the fourth, Psychosis.
In addition, in 2018 and 2019, Max and Igor Cavalera undertook a large-scale "Return Beneath Arise" tour. They traveled the world with a program of songs from Sepultura's classic albums Arise and Beneath The Remains. The brothers did not deprive Russia of their attention either - in the fall of 2018, as part of this tour, they gave nine concerts in our country.
Personal life facts
Max Kavalera was married to Gloria Buinovski in 1991, who is of Russian origin. The fact is that her grandmother emigrated from our country after the 1917 revolution, fleeing the Bolsheviks. Moreover, Gloria has an aunt in Russia. She lives in Omsk, and Max and his wife even visited her during a tour of the Russian Federation.
Gloria is 16 years older than Max. And by the time of the wedding with the famous musician, she already had four children from past relationships - Jason, Dana, Richie and Roxanne. As a result, they were all officially adopted by the Cavalier. However, in the future, Gloria and Max also had two common children - Zion and Igor.
On August 16, 1996, a terrible tragedy happened in the musician's family. One of his stepsons, Dana, who was only 21 at the time, died in a car accident. When this happened, Max Cavalera was on another tour with Sepultura (as a result, this tour, of course, was canceled).
Max is quite a religious person. At the age of nine, he was baptized in the Vatican, but not so long ago, the musician, as reported by the media, changed his confession - from Catholicism he converted to Orthodoxy.
