The influence of this man on the development of modern architecture cannot be exaggerated. Le Corbusier is known for his projects in many countries. He always approached the solution of the tasks in a comprehensive manner, taking into account local characteristics and landscape.
early years
The founder and progenitor of new architectural styles was born on October 6, 1887 in the family of a watchmaker. The parents lived in the French-speaking canton of Switzerland. The factories for the production of the famous Swiss chronometers still operate here. My father was engaged in painting dials for pocket and wall clocks. His mother taught piano technique and the basics of musical notation at the College of Music. According to the established tradition, the boy was assigned to the school of arts and crafts. Here he mastered the technique of creating monograms and various methods of applying enamel coating to dials.
Corbusier became seriously interested in architecture when he was sixteen years old. Two years later, under the guidance of an experienced teacher, he developed his first project of a residential building. Having received a decent design fee, the aspiring architect decided to visit Austria and Italy. In these countries, he spent almost a year studying architecture, local folklore and folk traditions. Later, the architect admitted that travel had largely replaced his university education. Returning home, he created his own design office.
The era of reinforced concrete
In the process of teaching and fulfilling real orders, Corbusier made several discoveries, which were included in textbooks for students. Suffice it to mention the pillars and roof terraces. The reinforced concrete pillar-shaped support lifts the building off the ground and creates free space that can be used as a car park. Today this approach is used in all civilized countries. But in the first quarter of the last century, reinforced concrete was widely used in the construction of residential and industrial buildings, but very rarely as elements of architecture.
It should be noted that the architect created not only the exterior of the building, but also paid great attention to the layout of the interior. Corbusier created a classification of furniture, highlighting the following three criteria: by type, by functionality, by the type of interaction with a person. According to the architect's project, several houses were erected in Algeria and Brazil, fully equipped with furniture. The architect introduced the concept of "residential unit" into the professional lexicon. Today, this element is used when creating any urban planning plan.
Recognition and privacy
Over the years, Le Corbusier has been invited to different countries to implement his projects. In the 30s, the Tsentrosoyuz building was erected in Moscow according to the project of the famous architect. In France, he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor.
Little is known about the architect's personal life. From time to time he started a relationship with this or that woman. The marriage with model Yvonne Gallis lasted almost thirty years. They had no children. Le Corbusier died in August 1965.
