The Blue Pond Biei reservoir is located at the foot of Tokachi Mountain in the southeast direction of the town of the same name. The name of the pond is due to the incredible color of the water. An unreal shade changes depending on the angle and time of day from bright and rich blue to the most delicate turquoise.

Man made miracle

Biei was formed in 1988. The story began in a decision made by the local authorities and the construction of a dam to protect the population from mudflows from a nearby volcano and the accompanying eruptions.

The work was completed in 1989. As a result, moisture flowing down from the peaks filled the nearby forest. The effect was unpredictable: tree trunks from now on rushed into the sky directly from the water.

Scientists have yet to agree on the reason for the liquid's incredible color. According to some hypotheses, it was made like this by the combination of river water rich in aluminum hydroxide with liquid from the Platinum geothermal springs. They are located a little further a couple of kilometers northwest of the reservoir.

The mixture received the ability to reflect light to the extent that it is inherent in the atmosphere of the planet. Therefore, the pond has acquired a legendary shade.

World glory

Not only locals, but also travelers from all over the world come here to admire the incredible blue water and amazing trees. An extraordinary landmark has become a visiting card of the Land of the Rising Sun. Photo taken by local photographer Kent Shiraishi, selected as the OS X Mountain Lion screensaver.

Shot in October 2012, during a snowfall. National Geographic magazine made the photo world famous, calling it "Blue Pond and First Snow."

The beauty of the reservoir is revealed to the maximum with the arrival of cold weather. The surface is covered with a thin layer of ice. The pond acquires special charm if it snows at this time.

However, Biei looks no less impressive at any other time of the year. For example, on the Background, the multicolored autumn foliage of the trees surrounding the reservoir.

The element has no power over beauty

Getting here is not easy, but it cannot be said that the route is incredibly difficult. First you need to go by train, then by bus or car, and finally, walk about half an hour. In half an hour you can bypass Biei.

The problem is, it is advisable to arrive early, because a huge number of people who want to admire here are everywhere. Therefore, it is almost impossible to find a place to shoot.

In 2016, to the great horror of the Japanese in this area, after the strongest typhoon, many dry trees surrounding the pond were knocked down, and after the disaster the color of the pond changed from turquoise to a greenish-dirty shade. But, fortunately, the previous color has recovered: the water is constantly renewing itself. Therefore, you can see Biei in its former glory.
