After a two-year period of work in the Youth Theater, Tolmacheva returned to the capital, where until 1956 she appeared on the stage of the Mossovet Theater. During this period, her repertoire consisted of the performances "Masquerade", "Theft", "In a quiet side street" and "Karin Lefebvre".

And then followed a very long (more than half a century) and fruitful period of work at Sovremennik, where Lilia Mikhailovna made her debut with the play Forever Alive. It is interesting that the community of like-minded people, who became her real family, repeatedly stopped the actress's impulses to leave the stage. She plunged so deeply into the theatrical activities of her native institution that later she often repeated about his leading role in her life in general.

The cinematic debut of the People's Artist of the RSFSR took place in 1958 with the role of Nina in the film Life Passed By. Her filmography is indicative of the fact that the actress made the main emphasis in her professional career on the theatrical stage. However, her roles in the film projects "An Ordinary Story" and "Steep Route" fell in love with the multimillion army of her fans.
