For many centuries Ukraine has not been sovereign, we are not talking about occupation or seizure, its territory has always been relatively free, but as part of other principalities or states. Therefore, most of her holidays are the same with the holidays of Russia, Lithuania, Austria, Hungary and Poland. But Ukraine became a modern state only in 1991, having received the opportunity to become a young, but already independent country. And therefore, the main holiday, which belongs to the state, is Independence Day.
The Independence Day of Ukraine is celebrated at the same time: August 24 from year to year. It should be noted that state and some church holidays in Ukraine are days off.
Public holidays of the country
The calculation of public holidays begins from the beginning of the year, and, of course, the first applies to January 1 - New Year. In the same month, the second state and church holiday is celebrated - Christmas, it is also celebrated at the same time - January 7. It is followed by International Women's Day, which falls at the beginning of March, namely on the 8th, when men congratulate all women, presenting them with various gifts.
Then it's time to celebrate Easter, but this is not a public holiday, and therefore the day is not a day off. This church holiday does not have a fixed date and therefore can be celebrated in April or in May.
Unlike Russia, Ukraine has retained the original name of the first: today the holiday is called Labor Day.
Easter is followed by public holidays: May 1 (International Workers Day) and May 9 (Victory Day).
Freedom Holidays
In the summer, Ukrainians will have two more regular days off: June 28, when Constitution Day is celebrated, and August 24, Independence Day, which has already been mentioned.
All of these aforementioned holidays are marked in red on the calendar and, of course, are days off. Therefore, Ukrainians have not only time to work, but also have fun. This is especially true of noisy festivals in the winter season, when in January the celebration of public holidays begins at the beginning of the month and ends in the middle.
On Victory Day, it is customary to rest for three days, transferring the days off to one of the workers. Usually, military reviews and fireworks are organized on a holiday date.
There is also a very special holiday in Ukraine, which is called the Day of Unity. It falls on January 22nd. The holiday was established in honor of the historical events of 1918, when the country first tried to declare its independence. It was on January 22 that the Act "Zluki" (Velyka Zluka) was drawn up and signed - an act of unification of Ukrainian lands, which was promulgated in Kiev on Sophia Square. The day became an official public holiday only in 2011, receiving the name Day of Unity and Freedom of Ukraine.
